PODER IN ACTION / AZ PODER COMMUNICATIONS FELLOWSHIP

THE JOB: Poder in Action and AZ Poder are looking for paid Communications Fellows to join our team! As a fellow, you’ll be a key part of our work to build the power of people of color and working-class communities. You’ll learn about our model for community organizing, develop communications skills and experience, and gain a better understanding of how to use communications and digital tools to create change. 

THE FELLOWS: We’re looking for candidates who are committed to Poder’s work and excited to learn more about our approach to making change. Our ideal candidates will take initiative, pay attention to detail, and work well independently.

RESPONSIBILITIES: You’ll take on tasks like background research, copywriting, developing graphics for our AZ Poder social media accounts, creating short direct-to-camera videos, and drafting op-eds and letters to the editor. Specific tasks and responsibilities will be tailored to the organization’s needs, your skills, and your areas of interest. There will be lots of opportunities to try new things, experiment, get feedback, and learn. 

 

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

You should apply if you meet one or more of these qualifications:

  • You are a strong writer, able to master new ideas quickly and turn them into concise, clear, and compelling written materials
  • OR you are great at taking photos, either with your smartphone or with more sophisticated equipment 
  • OR you love creating short videos, either with your smartphone or with more sophisticated equipment 
  • OR  you have an eye for design and are able to use online software like Canva or to create eye-catching graphics

Candidates should align with Poder in Action’s overall mission and vision and theory of change, and should have some experience with organizing and social movements. We’re looking for people who have turned out for rallies and actions or been involved in organizing on campus or in the community. Prior professional or leadership experience is not required. 

OPTIONAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Having any of the following would be helpful, but definitely not required:

  • Professional experience in field or online organizing, political campaigns and/or public relations and marketing
  • Ability to take great photos
  • Knowledge of CMS systems like EveryAction 
  • Bilingual in Spanish

LOGISTICS: 

  • We have the week of April 28 in mind as a start date, although there is some flexibility.
  • Fellowships will wrap up in mid-July. 
  • Fellows will work 15-20 hours per week. Fellows must have at least some availability during the standard work week (M-F, 9 am to 5 pm). Some availability to attend weekend and/or evening events is also required. 
  • Fellows will receive a $1500 monthly stipend.
