Description
Position Purpose
As part of a 24/7 Security team, protect the grounds, plant collections, and facilities of the Desert Botanical Garden. Provide for the safety and security of guests, staff members, and Garden volunteers. Enforce all policies and procedures within the Garden. The Ranger is a uniformed, unarmed position and retains no peace officer powers.
Essential Duties
- Maintain surveillance of Garden by foot and vehicular patrols to protect the property and deter acts of theft, vandalism, or negligence
- Act as first responder to all emergencies, including medical emergencies or other unusual occurrences; coordinate police and/or fire department response, if required
- Provide first aid for guests, staff, and volunteers
- Provide security escorts for cash handling and other revenue operations
- Conduct safety and security checks of all facilities, including the core Garden, perimeter fencing, and other specified areas in and surrounding the property
- Secure all buildings, exhibits, lab facilities; operate protection systems
- Demonstrate professional and courteous demeanor at all times when interacting with Garden visitors, staff, volunteers, and onsite partners; ensure Garden policies are enforced
- Use situational awareness to anticipate and solve problems; improve and streamline operations to provide quality, seamless customer service
- Monitor events for alcohol compliance, crowd, and traffic control
- Maintain all parking and security equipment
Hourly Pay: $22.00/hour
Qualifications
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Maintain Certification in First Aid, CPR, AED, BBP, and ACO
- Superior customer service skills
- Ability to walk, stand, sit and work outdoors for significant periods of time, in all weather conditions; visual and hearing acuity, including color spectrum to observe emergency lights and ability to hear audible alarms; ability to identify unsafe conditions/behaviors; and ability to fully operate communication devices, including radios and cell phones
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle; possession of a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
- Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually
- Minimum of one year of experience providing security, ranger or campus public safety services in a park, zoo or other hospitality/guest services environment preferred
- Ability to work any shift, including weekends or holidays, as assigned
Equipment Used
Typical office equipment; this role will also use a two-way radio, motorized cart, first aid equipment, and AED.
Internal Communication
Frequent interaction with all Garden employees.
External Communication
Rangers will have frequent communication with guests and vendors.
Working Conditions
Some physical effort beyond what’s typically required in a normal office environment. Time periods of high workload may require additional hours. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal to moderate. The Garden is an outdoor venue, and while the offices and climate controlled, patrolling the Garden and walking between sites in extreme heat and occasional cold is expected. Most shifts will be outdoors, even in inclement weather.
Must be able to walk, sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, see, hear, speak, read, and type. Manual dexterity and the ability to lift up to 25 pounds required.
