The Director serves as Chief Program Officer within the ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation (Center) and is responsible for planning, directing, evaluating and managing programmatic operations. Such responsibilities include overseeing the Center’s programming for Professional Development Education and Capacity Building Initiatives. The director leads a broad-based portfolio of research-informed continuing and professional education training programs, workshops, conferences and convenings, that provide the highest quality and most relevant content through multiple distribution channels, for those who lead, manage and support nonprofits. Additionally, the director oversees a portfolio of community-based programs that serve individuals, organizations and networks through online, hybrid and in-person modalities supporting local, regional, national and global publics as appropriate to the mission and strategic direction of the Center, that currently including multiple streams of federal AmeriCorps funding. All activities contribute to the overall Center’s goal of helping stakeholders achieve enduring social impact.

The Director will have a deep understanding of the social issues or causes the nonprofit addresses, along with a commitment to advancing social change and equity; knowledge of contemporary life-long educational practices including adult learning pedagogy, what constitutes successful “knowledge to practice” programs, and how leading edge continuing and professional education principles are implemented to achieve desired results; proven track record of successfully designing, implementing, and evaluating programs or initiatives that advance the organization's mission and objectives; commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive organizational culture, and the ability to integrate such principles into program design and implementation; skills in sales, new business development and fundraising (including grant writing), to drive business plans; knowledge of management and supervisory principles and practices; knowledge of budget management methods and techniques; and knowledge of strategic planning principles and practices.

In collaboration with a team, the director:

  • Designs, develops, implements and evaluates innovative, research-informed, learning and capacity building opportunities to advance the Center’s mission;
  • Hires, orients, supervises, supports and evaluates program and instructional staff, content matter experts, and others engaged through the unit;
  • Works with the program unit’s staff team and instructional knowledge specialists to assure the currency and relevancy of programming and curriculum content;
  • Supports multiple content distribution channels including through synchronous, asynchronous and hybrid delivery modalities;
  • Positions the program unit for strategic growth and sustainability across a variety of markets; identifies nonprofit and philanthropic market needs and implements programs to address the knowledge and tools required to accelerate social impact;
  • Manages the program unit’s revenue and expense projections based upon annually approved goals.
  • Achieves full cost-recovery through a fee-based and sponsor-driven earned income business model; meets and exceeds positive relationships to sponsors and donors who invest in programming;
  • Partners with the Center’s marketing team to develop and implement appropriate promotion strategies and plans to achieve enrollment and finance goals;
  • Develops, implements, and maintains unit policies and procedures in alignment with Center strategic initiatives and requirements;
  • Resolves problems and issues affecting the unit and oversees measures to improve its effectiveness, efficiency and impact; and,

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Education, Nonprofit Leadership and Management, or related field AND five (5) years of related administrative experience, including four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience in Nonprofit Leadership and Management; philanthropic studies and/or social entrepreneurship;
  • Experience in adult learning and professional development education programs;
  • Experience in seeking outside funding and signature sponsorships for the Center’s programming and convenings; familiarity with AmeriCorps grant and related external grant administration;
  • Experience with budgeting and alignment of revenue and expenses to achieve finance goals;
  • Demonstrated knowledge with the use and features of technology learning platforms (e.g., Canvas, etc.);
  • Evidence of demonstrating a people-centric and Mission focused ethic of service.
  • Experience in problem solving and critical thinking for decision-making;
  • Experience in planning, analyzing and coordinating activities by establishing priorities;
  • Experience in managing, supervising and evaluating assigned staff;
  • Experience in designing and implementing programs;
  • Experience in implementing successful fundraising and selling strategies to achieve program goals;
  • Experience in preparing budgets and accomplishing financial forecasting;
  • Experience using computer-based technology in performing activities;
  • Experience in communicating with internal and external stakeholders, verbally and in written form;
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships as a member of the Center’s management team.
