This is an online course with specified due dates for each discussion question and class assignment. Instructional staff are available to aid you with subject questions and help guide you through each weekly course module. In addition, a required Zoom session each week provides additional course reinforcement, student-instructor Q&A, and networking for students.

Volunteer programs require the same managerial effort as other organizational operation efforts. There are many factors to consider in ensuring that the experience is positive for both the volunteer and the organization. In this course, you are taught the basics of recruiting, managing, motivating, recognizing and rewarding staff and volunteers to effectively utilize and retain their strengths and skills.

Special attention is placed within this course to respond to the impact COVID-19 has had on this area of nonprofit resource development and management.

Jayson Matthews
Knowledge Specialist, Nonprofit Management Institute

Jayson Matthews is an outcome-driven public sector leader and engaging facilitator with approximately 20 years of experience in the nonprofit and local government sectors. Currently an assistant director at Maricopa County Human Services, Matthews manages and supervises a division of 40 individuals that provides vital human services to vulnerable seniors. Prior to joining Maricopa County, Matthews served as a vice president at the Valley of the Sun United Way and was responsible for the direction and oversight of all Basic Needs work, including Housing, Homelessness, Hunger and Health.  Prior to joining the United Way, Matthews was a senior program manager at the Corporation for Supportive Housing as well as a chief development officer for a Feeding America partner food bank. In addition, he has direct experience working with elected officials and government officials around the issues of homelessness, housing, hunger, children and youth, and human service planning. Jayson earned a master’s degree in public administration from Arizona State University.
