As a working board of directors, members are responsible for:

1. Determining, designing, and approving the policies of the organization;
2. Ensuring that the organization achieves its stated mission, purposes and objectives;
3. Overseeing that the funds necessary to achieve its purposes are raised;
4. Providing accountability to the broader community;
5. Providing sanction and legitimacy to the work of the organization from the wider community;
6. Providing consultation and expertise needed for good management in all of the functional areas of the organization;
7. Assuring the financial stability of the organization;
8. Providing continuity to the organization as staff come and go;
9. Attending regularly called and ad hoc meetings as needed;
10. Serving on board committees as assigned;
11. Assisting staff as requested;
12. Evaluating the job performance of the executive director; and
13. Encouraging appropriate non-board members to support the organization and serve on its committees in order to increase the number of people who are committed to and knowledgeable about the organization.

Qualified applicants demonstrate:

1. Leadership in professional and community positions;
2. Professionalism in working with a diverse group of individuals;
3. Commitment to supporting the organization with time, talent, and treasure;
4. Passion for education and supporting youth throughout their academic journeys; and
5. Willingness to promote the organization with others and ask for their support (i.e., financial, in-kind).
