Summary/Objective
The Marketing Specialist represents the United Way brand and plays a highly visible and integral role within the Brand & Marketing team. This is a foundational position supporting the creative development and execution of written and visual content under the direction of the Content Manager. This role requires a formal education in communication, journalism, marketing, digital media or a related field, skilled communication, working knowledge of storytelling, social media and marketing concepts and strong writing skills.
This individual will possess a propensity for collaboration and teamwork. They can assess and manage the priority of their directed workload, establish production timelines, meet deadlines and effectively communicate progress updates and needs. The ideal candidate demonstrates a high level of initiative, organization, attention to detail and creativity. They have a passion for producing engaging and diverse content, community connection and basic social media and marketing strategies. They are eager to learn and grow within their role. Must be able to work a full-time schedule with occasional evening and weekend availability for special events and social media needs.
Essential Functions

- Under the direction and guidance of the Content Manager, creates engaging written and visual content for the organization’s website, social media channels, newsletters, presentations, media outreach and other materials in alignment with creative vision, content strategy and brand guidelines
- Collaborates with marketing team and cross-departmentally to support the development and implementation of the organization’s editorial and content calendars
- Creates outlines and drafts content to communicate compelling on-brand messaging to the organization’s audiences including captivating headlines, engaging narratives and persuasive calls to action
- Assists with sourcing, soliciting and scheduling content and storytelling opportunities and interviews by means cross-departmental collaboration and external partner research and outreach
- Assists with curating and designing organic social media content at the direction of the Content Manager with creative copy, custom text, images, graphics, videos, stories/reels and more to appeal to diverse audiences, while supporting the analysis of performance using analytic tools to assess effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement
- Monitors and engages social media accounts to create timely and live content utilizing organic, provided and shared/tagged content via real-time posts, stories and comments, responds to direct messages and content engagement, proactively engages with corporate and community partner social media content and draws inspiration from similar and relatable media to develop future content
- Works in support of the Marketing Manager and Content Manager to optimize email and social content and strategies based on analytics, algorithms, trends and best practices
- Assists in the updating of the organization’s website content and suggests search engine optimization (SEO) improvement strategies, collaborating with internal, cross-departmental and external website partners, when necessary
- Assists in capturing photography and creating photo albums, as well as with video production
- Applies professional judgment, seeks guidance when needed and works with internal contributors to obtain proper approvals within deadlines
- Performs other duties and supports other projects as assigned
Qualifications
Required Education & Experience
A combination of education or relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirements.
- At least one (1) year of experience in a similar role
- Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, marketing, digital media or a related field
- Proficient in Microsoft 365 products and AP Style writing
- Professional experience with social media, digital marketing platforms and software such as Sprout Social, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, Flickr, Vimeo, Classy, Mailchimp and WordPress
