Job title: Communications Specialist

The Communications Specialist is a pivotal mid-level role tasked with crafting and implementing diverse communication strategies to captivate and engage internal and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate has a solid track record of producing persuasive content, adeptly managing media relations, steering social media platforms, and spearheading marketing and communication initiatives. They will excel in storytelling, with a particular flair for showcasing the triumphs of nonprofit programs through compelling narratives and striking visuals. As well as be eager to learn and undertake any challenge to effectively promote the Southwest Human Development story.

Job Duties:

  • Content Creation
    • Work closely with program staff to capture and tell compelling stories highlighting the impact of SWHD programs on children and families and showcasing SWHD expertise in early childhood development.
    • Whether solo or in collaboration with the marketing team and outside vendors produce regular multimedia content, including videos, infographics, blog posts, social media, etc.
    • Write compelling marketing copy for fundraising campaigns across multiple platforms including direct mail, email, text campaigns, online ads, and landing pages.
    • Write, design, and distribute internal and external newsletters, ensuring content is engaging, informative, and aligned with the organization’s messaging and goals.
  • Media Relations
    • Write, edit, and distribute press releases highlighting organizational milestones, program successes, and events.
    • Work with an external public relations contractor to arrange for and coordinate media interviews, including preparing talking points and briefing materials for spokespersons.
  • Social Media Management
    • Create, schedule, and monitor content that resonates with our audience, driving awareness of our programs and initiatives.
    • Track and analyze social media performance, making data-driven recommendations for improvement.
    • Graphic Design, Photography & Videography:
      • Utilize basic graphic design skills to create visually appealing marketing materials, including brochures, flyers, and social media graphics.
      • Capture high-quality photos and videos at events and program activities to support storytelling and promotional efforts.
      • Edit and produce video content for use across digital platforms.
  • Project Management:
    • Meet with internal stakeholders to identify how marketing communications will support their objectives, then develop project plans, establish deadlines, assign responsibilities, and monitor progress for various initiatives.
    • Manage multiple marketing and communications projects simultaneously, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.
    • Regularly report on project outcomes, providing insights and recommendations for future improvements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in marketing communications, preferably in a nonprofit organization.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with an established portfolio of writing examples for various business purposes including press releases, newsletters, social media, and marketing pieces.
  • Proven experience in media relations, including working with internal stakeholders to identify topics, write press releases, secure media coverage, and work with media on-site.
  • Moderate proficiency in graphic design, including experience with Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.
  • Basic photography and videography skills, including shooting and editing content for marketing purposes.
  • Experience with creating and managing social media content and platforms.
  • Experience with WordPress and basic website editing.
  • Experience with analytics tools (Google Analytics, social media insights, etc.) to measure the success of campaigns and initiatives.
  • Familiarity with CRM systems and email marketing platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Constant Contact).
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards for digital content to ensure inclusivity in all communications.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with internal teams and external partners.
