Job Description 

Summary/objective

The School of Ballet Arizona faculty are primarily responsible for delivering high-quality dance education to School of Ballet Arizona students. Teachers support the education and curriculum standards set forth by the School and are accountable to the School Director. 

Teachers should have experience in following and teaching a curriculum, the ability to motivate students, a positive and collaborative nature and the ability to adapt to the style of Ballet Arizona.

This role requires significant physical activity. Teachers of all disciplines must be able to clearly communicate technique both vocally and physically to students. Teaching Artists will work offsite from the Ballet Arizona studios and will work with students of a variety of ages, experience, abilities, and backgrounds.

Essential functions

  • Teach as needed, not to exceed an average of 20 hours per week
  • Teach and/or assist with ballet classes for diverse ages and abilities
  • Knowledge of Ballet Pedagogy
  • Implement program curriculum
  • Plan weekly instruction
  • Choreograph and/or set and rehearse repertoire for scheduled School of Ballet Arizona performances as needed
  • Provide direct instruction to all participants that is in line with the spirit of the program, age specific, inclusive, developmentally, and culturally appropriate
  • Assist School Director and School Manager with family communications on student progress and/or behavioral issues
  • Maintain positive relations with existing community partners
  • Maintain polite and professional communication
  • Attend staff meetings and student conferences as scheduled by the School *Administrative compensation rate will apply*
  • Be available for costume and ballet shoes consultations as scheduled by the School
  • Actively mentor students and assist with student evaluations. Meet with School Director as necessary to discuss student progress and gather/address teacher feedback
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Additional Responsibilities for Teachers in the satellite campus program include the following:

  • Be able to provide or be eligible to receive a Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance card for the state of Arizona to program manager before classes start on January 6, 2025
  • Have or be able to obtain certifications in CPR and BLS
  • Teach class as assigned by School Director
  • Review your Ballet Arizona emails on a daily basis to stay informed of upcoming events and deadlines
  • Scheduling Conflict: email School Manager immediately
  • Provide and run class music: Phone or iPod with ad-free music streaming, or CDs. (Sound system is provided)
  • Rehearsal and performance attendance
    1. Rehearsal hours are recorded in the Admin column of your SBAZ timesheets
    2. Faculty need to assist with set up and clean up before and after performances

  • Ability to build strong relationships with students and families
  • Exude joy and love of dance
  • Must be flexible and able to adapt to changing needs in a fast-paced environment, as well as be a dynamic, expressive, and energized mover
  • Must maintain high customer service standards for both internal and external stakeholders
  • Are dynamic, expressive, and energized mover
  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills maintaining polite and professional communication
  • Are as passionate about the art of teaching as they are about their art form
  • Have a confident presence and positive and inclusive classroom management skills
  • Have experience with (or a willingness to learn) lesson planning and designing units of instruction
  • Are reflective practitioners who seek opportunities for continuous learning
  • Believe that all children are dancers and capable of achieving success in and through dance

Supervisory responsibilities

  • This position does not have any direct reports.

Work environment

  • Work is conducted primarily in a dance studio setting at the Child Crisis Arizona building in Mesa, Arizona. Event support at the main studio location and at external event sites is required.
  • Some weekends, late evenings, or on-call work are required.
  • This position is not eligible for a travel stipend.

Physical demands

  • Physical requirements include standing, walking, and demonstrating dance steps for long periods of time and light computer usage.
  • Significant physical effort is required – must be able to lift up to 20 pounds.

Travel required

  • Travel to and from external event sites (within Maricopa County) is occasionally required. 
  • Must be willing and able to commute to and from the office on a regular basis. 

Required education and experience 

  • 5+ years of experience teaching pre-ballet and ballet
  • 10+ years of ballet training

Preferred education and experience

  • Experience teaching in a ballet school and/or dance program
  • Experience as a professional company dancer
  • Spanish fluency
