About ALWAYS: ALWAYS’ mission is to remove legal barriers to safety, stability, and opportunity for trafficking survivors of all ages and people under 25 who have been impacted by crime, homelessness, or foster care. The organization is made up of attorneys, legal advocates, and law fellows who are dedicated to providing no-cost, trauma-informed, culturally conscientious services to people who would otherwise not have access to representation or intensive pro se assistance. With the help of ALWAYS, clients and other community members are able to obtain housing, pursue careers, and achieve safe, stable lives for themselves and their families.
About the Position: ALWAYS is seeking a mission-oriented Staff Attorney to join our Phoenix-based team. The Staff Attorney will work with other attorneys, law student interns, and a social worker to provide legal services in various areas focusing on family law but not excluding ALWAYS' other practice areas like criminal history repair. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to justice and the wellbeing of the community.
Salary Range: $65,000 - $70,000 for a 32.5 hour work week. (Monday through Friday, 9am until 4pm)
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
(1) Direct Representation and Case Management
- Conduct screenings and intakes to assess eligibility for ALWAYS services;
- Provide legal representation and pro se assistance in a variety of practice areas including: (a) Family Law: Orders of Protection, Legal Decision-Making and Parenting Time ("Custody"), Child Support, Divorce; and (b) Criminal History Repair: Petitions to Seal, Expungement, Good Cause Exceptions for Fingerprint Clearance Cards;
- Work with clients who have experienced trauma and/or other adverse circumstances;
- Work alongside other staff to provide referrals to people who are deemed ineligible for ALWAYS services;
- Participate in team meetings, case staffings, and weekly 1:1s with supervising Managing Attorney.
(2) Community Engagement
- Provide trainings for other organizations, government entities, and practitioners;
- Advance advocacy priorities and promote ALWAYS' services by working with local and national stakeholder networks and peer organization representatives;
- Represent ALWAYS at community clinics, drop-in centers, and other outreach opportunities.
(3) Tracking Data
- Maintain accurate, timely records and track eligible activities in ALWAYS' case management system;
- Help maintain a running list of case wins for reporting purposes.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Credentials:
- Active Arizona State Bar license, in good standing;
- Family law experience;
- Ability to travel to off-site locations in Maricopa County and periodically to Pima County to meet with/serve clients (mileage is reimbursed);
- Commitment to obtaining justice for individuals from marginalized communities;
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively;
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and writing skills;
- Strong organizational skills;
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Written and spoken Spanish fluency;
- Experience working with survivors of trafficking, victims of other crimes, young people, unhoused communities, and/or people who are or have been in the foster care system.
