Rural nonprofits benefit from Freeport-McMoRan Foundation Social Investment Grant to ASU Lodestar Center

Phoenix, Ariz. (March 5, 2018) – The ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation extends its continuing partnership with the Freeport-McMoRan Foundation through the latest grant of $82,100 for new programming that will span through September 2019. Since 2009, the ASU Lodestar Center has partnered with Freeport-McMoRan involving nearly $800,000 in grant funding to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations in mining communities in the Southwest United States. This strategic partnership has allowed the Center to reach small- to mid-level nonprofits in rural mining areas and provide much-needed support, knowledge and tools to help them achieve their missions.

Through the Freeport-McMoRan Foundation’s Social Investment grant, the ASU Lodestar Center will now be providing trainings on nonprofit sustainability online and in-person. Furthermore, the partnership will continue as a cohort-based program model that leverages the knowledge and passion of local leaders to determine the most critical challenges and identify powerful opportunities for change in their communities. Additionally, web-based leadership development programming will be provided by the ASU Lodestar Center on topics such as mission-centered decision-making, program development, resource development, human resources, organizational infrastructure, financial management, communications and evaluation.

Communities selected by Freeport-McMoRan to be the recipients of this grant’s programming initiatives include: Ajo, AZ; Baghdad, AZ; Bisbee, AZ; Globe-Miami, AZ; Graham County, AZ; Greenlee County, AZ; Green Valley/Sahuarita, AZ; Climax, CO; Clear Creek County, CO; Grand County, CO and Grant County, NM.

"The relationships Bagdad Lifelong Learners has developed with local partners has been instrumental in our current and future development. I can confidently say that our members feel great satisfaction from all our efforts and deep excitement about the future. We here in Bagdad really can't thank you and the ASU Lodestar Center staff enough for your support," said Anthony Tunis, Bagdad cohort leader.

“There is increased awareness that meaningful impact is made when local citizens determine their own priorities for how philanthropic dollars are best invested to achieve community advancement,” said Robert F. Ashcraft, Ph.D., executive director of the ASU Lodestar Center and the Saguaro Professor of Civic Enterprise in ASU’s School of Community Resources and Development. “Freeport-McMoRan values such a community-based approach and we are privileged to support and manage the process,” Ashcraft added.

As the ASU Lodestar Center continues to reach out through these kinds of direct training opportunities and an ever-increasing catalog of online workshops, courses and webinars to assist nonprofit efforts throughout the greater Southwest and beyond, we are continually inspired and motivated by the great work being done in these communities. Nonprofit organizations provide crucial services and assistance to the people of their communities, and the ASU Lodestar Center is firmly committed to helping these organizations achieve their noble missions through increased effectiveness, further-reaching impact, and a greater depth of community embeddedness and public support.
