The Most Important People in Our Economy, Democracy, and Community; Why Everyone Should Invest in America’s Nonprofit Workforce

A unique, provocative, and practical conversation with Rusty Morgen Stahl

Rusty Stahl is the Founder and President and CEO of Fund the People, an organization that seeks to maximize investment in the nonprofit workforce. It’s through philanthropy that we improve the world around us: caring for the vulnerable, fighting disease, supporting the arts. But none of these philanthropic investments would have any impact without the nonprofit professionals who are getting the work done.

Our communities, environment, and economy all benefit when nonprofit leaders have the support to not just survive, but to thrive. Indeed, investing in the nonprofit workforce is the best thing we can do to increase performance and impact across the social sector. It is also a matter of ensuring social justice within the very organizations that work for social justice out in the world.

Why should donors care about the nonprofit workforce? The problem is that there is a gaping deficit of investment. Foundations use only 1% of grant dollars to support staff development in grantee organizations, and individual donors focus almost exclusively on programming.  Outdated myths of overhead and martyrdom must be replaced with a positive new mindset that lifts up the dignity and powerful contributions of nonprofit workers. And we need to make talent-investment a widespread practice in grantmaking, fundraising, and nonprofit management.

Rusty Stahl will lead a unique, provocative, and practical conversation that demonstrates practical data and resources from the Fund the People Toolkit, a comprehensive set of original resources to help funders and nonprofits integrate talent-investing into their work.
