JOB SUMMARY:  The Director of Philanthropy is invested in the mission of the organization and can help support its growing resource development operation and work to expand Catholic Charities donor base; develop and build a strong, diversified fundraising program. This includes the identification, cultivation, engagement, and stewardship of donors as well as other stakeholders in the community.  Major gifts, special events, individual and corporate donors, tax credit contributions, direct mail, and work place giving all fall under the responsibility of the Director of Philanthropy.    

The Director of Philanthropy is responsible for overseeing database management and donor cultivation/stewardship strategies. The position will be an integral part of the coordination of efforts between marketing, volunteers, parish/community engagement and resource development.

 

JOB DUTIES:   

  1. Work to expand Catholic Charities donor base; develop and build a strong, diversified fundraising/resource development program which includes: major gifts, annual campaign, direct mail, individual, corporate and foundation giving, planned giving, CDA, United Way, and special events. 
  2. Work in partnership with the VP of Philanthropy to develop written, detailed goals, strategies and action plans for all fundraising efforts.
  3. Develops and implements the annual Philanthropy Calendar (appeals, campaigns, events, activities).
  4. As a member of the Philanthropy Leadership Team ensure that all annual fundraising goals are met; oversee support to maximize efficiency, maintain fundraising schedules, and streamline internal systems when and where appropriate.
  5. Directs and manages mid-level, major gifts, and individual giving programs.
  6. Develops and implements moves management processes  for the organization and is actively engaged in the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of funding sources, particularly individual, corporate donors and mid and major gift donors and prospects.
  7. Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors, including creating fundraising policies and procedures relative to major and planned giving and stewardship practices, as necessary.
  8. Plan and oversee gift (cash and in-kind) acknowledgment procedures with donors within donor database, monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leaders.
  9. Administer the Tax Credit Program by strategizing, creating mailers and other communications to continue to grow the tax credit program fundraising base, in coordination with Marketing/Communications and other Philanthropy Team members.
  10. With collaboration from the members of the Marketing/Communications Team manage and coordinate direct mail program to raise awareness and increase annual revenue.
  11. Serve as a key staff member on the Board’s Development and Outreach Committee.  Support and create ongoing opportunities and activities to inspire and engage the board in their role in donor cultivation and stewardship.  Assists in the staffing of regional Community Councils and additional sub committees of the Development and Outreach Committee.
  12. Promote a culture of philanthropy that permeates the organization. Works with VP of Philanthropy to implement procedures, ensuring a hands on approach to promoting a philanthropic culture. 
  13. Provide strategic focus and tactical direction in the engagement of staff, volunteers and board in resource development activities.
  14. Coordinate with Marketing Director to implement a compelling and consistent message for Catholic Charities when soliciting donors.
  15. Ensure that the Resource Development programs and plans are consistent with and support the organization’s strategic plan and are executed in a timely fashion.
  16. In cooperation with the Grants Process, assist in the successful execution of the agency’s Grant Funding Plan.
  17. Stay abreast of philanthropic, economic, and social and community trends as they relate to Catholic Charities and ensure that staff and Board are informed of changes in trends and initiatives that might impact the organization.
  18. Continued focus on professional development to secure knowledge and skills in all areas of development including: major gifts, direct mail, events, deferred giving, annual giving and capital campaign.
  19. Supervise assigned staff in accordance with agency personnel practices including recruitment, training, performance evaluation, guidance, etc. Participate in the process of ongoing personal and professional development. Maintain comprehensive communication among all contacts (internal and external). Provide oversight and guidance for volunteers assigned to program. Model professional standards and ethics in accordance with agency philosophy.
  20. Maintains staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees; developing personal growth opportunities.
  21. Accomplishes staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; conducting training; implementing enforcing systems, policies, and procedures.
  22. Controls expenses by gathering and submitting budget information; scheduling expenditures; monitoring variances; implementing corrective actions.
  23. Set goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with company’s plans and vision and communicate them to subordinates. 
  24. Participate in and support Performance and Quality Improvement (PQI) initiatives to include attending appropriate program leadership meetings and attend all relevant PQI meetings to ensure organization-wide involvement in PQI and the development of program performance measurements.  Must also develop and provide appropriate staff training and support the recognition of accomplishments relative to PQI. 
  25. Promote ongoing commitment to excellence and continual quality improvement to ensure the highest quality of services to our staff and clients. 
  26. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Education /Background:  Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business or related field with related development experience required. CFRE accredited preferred. General knowledge of accounting & fundraising principals. Four to six years of senior professional development including a proven track record of fundraising including securing major gifts of $25,000 or more, large scale special events, moves management, success in securing individual and corporate gifts and third party fundraisers. Strong leadership skills and exceptional communication ability. Commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters. 
  2. Job Knowledge: Demonstrated ability to lead, teach, and supervise others.  Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and describe funding needs in a way that is compelling and comprehensive to the potential donor, individual and corporate. Ability to work productively with colleagues on behalf of the Office of Philanthropy. The ability to organize and prioritize fundraising activities effectively and to guide staff members in managing their particular responsibilities. Must have proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and expertise with donor database systems.Must be able to work collaboratively and effectively with all levels within the organization. Must be sensitive to cultural differences within the agency & community.  
  3. Working Conditions/Physical Demands:  Primarily office work, travel within Central and Northern Arizona on a frequent basis, travel to other areas of state as needed. Evening/Weekend hours required as needed. Must be able to stoop, bend, squat, sit on floor and ambulate over uneven floor surfaces including stairs and steps. Must be able to visually and auditory assess and interact with donors, clients and general public. May lift up to 25 pounds. 
  4. Other requirements: 
    1. Valid AZ driver’s license, reliable transportation and ability to show proof of registration/insurance.
    2. Must be at least 21 years of age.
    3. Fingerprint clearance or ability to obtain fingerprint clearance; must maintain clearance.
