NMI 103: Effective Financial Management Principles (February 2023)

This is an online course with specified due dates for each discussion question and class assignment. Instructional staff are available to aid you with subject questions and help guide you through each weekly course module. In addition, a required Zoom session each week provides additional course reinforcement, student-instructor Q&A, and networking for students.

In this course, participants will learn basic accounting principles and how to interpret and manage financial statements for a nonprofit organization. In addition, you will also learn the difference between accrual and cash basis accounting, and the importance of internal controls to protect the assets of your organization. Finally, you will learn how to analyze and use tax form 990, along with your organization’s annual report, as public relations tools.

Stephanie Viviano
Knowledge Specialist, Nonprofit Management Institute

Stephanie Viviano has held leadership positions for a variety of charitable non-profits, both large and small, over the last 15 years. Currently, Viviano is the Director of Finance at the Animal Defense League of Arizona where she provides strategic direction for all financial and operational functions, and directly oversees finance, accounting and IT management.  Prior to joining ADLA, she was the SVP of Finance and Administration at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale. Previously, she was the Director of Finance and Administration at the Bay Area Discovery Children’s Museum in California. 

Viviano currently serves on the Board of Directors of numerous non-profit organizations including Esperança, Hesperian Health Guides and the Hershey School of Dance. 

Viviano received her B.S. degree from Vanderbilt University and her M.B.A. in International Business from Thunderbird School of Global Management.
