FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Phoenix, Ariz. (January 24, 2013) – The ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation’s Public Allies Arizona program partnered with PHX United, Radio Campasina and Changing Today’s Society for a neighborhood cleanup project that took place January 21st, 2013 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day was also MLK Day of Service, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and his spirit of unity. This multicultural event brought together the diversity of the Phoenix community to begin cleaning local neighborhoods. This neighborhood cleanup project focused on the area from 7th Avenue and Pima to 11th Avenue and Buckeye.

Public Allies Arizona, now in its seventh year at Arizona State University, is an AmeriCorps national youth leadership organization that places service-minded young people in apprenticeships in nonprofit organizations throughout the community. It identifies talented young adults from diverse backgrounds and advances their leadership through a ten-month program of full-time, paid apprenticeships in nonprofit organizations, leadership trainings, and team service projects.

“Our Public Allies Arizona members are filled with spirit, energy and competence about the future of our communities,” said Dr. Robert F. Ashcraft, executive director of the ASU Lodestar Center and professor of nonprofit studies in ASU’s School of Community Resources and Development. “When they serve collectively as they did with this cleanup project, neighborhoods transform for the better as neighbors become more optimistic about their future,” he added.
