Philanthropy summit explores collaboration amongst donors and nonprofits along U.S.-Mexico border

On January 12, 2017 the "U.S.-Mexico Philanthropy: Expectations and Opportunities for 2017" event explored the challenges and opportunities for collaboration amongst donors and nonprofits in the border region. Experts discussed how leadership and philanthropy promotes a just, equitable and sustainable society and enables a foundation for forming and growing an intentional community of stakeholders to increase philanthropy between the U.S. and Mexico. 

The event featured welcome remarks from José Antonio Aguayo, Deputy Consul, Consulate General of Mexico in Phoenix and a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Robert Ashcraft, Executive Director, ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation and Board Chair, U.S.-Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership featuring community philanthropists dedicated to strengthening the ties between the U.S. and Mexico: 

  • Claudia Jasso-Stevens, Board Member, Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, Arizona
  • Hon. Amanda Aguirre, Former State Senator and President, Regional Center for Border Health, Arizona
  • Lucila Murguia de Arronte, Founder, Fundación Integra / Executive Director, Junta de Asistencia Privada, Chihuahua
  • Francisco Fernandez Jaramillo, Board Chair, Fundación del Empresariado Sonorense, Sonora
  • Enrique Díaz Rivera, Board Member, Fundación Tichi Muñoz, Sonora
  • Lisa Urias, Board Member, Arizona Community Foundation, Arizona

Opening remarks were made by Phoenix City Councilwoman Laura Pastor, ACF President & CEO Steve Seleznow, Deputy Consul General of Mexico Jose Antonio Aguayo Vazquez, and BPP Executive Director Andy Carey. Over 200 people registered to attend the event, and the room was filled to capacity. After a robust program, participants continued the conversation during a networking reception. This event was made possible through partnership with the U.S. Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership (BPP) and the Arizona Community Foundation (ACF), Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, Chicanos por la Causa and the ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation.
