BeachFleischman: Collaborating with Arizona not-for-profits

The Executive Leadership Certificate, comprised of 7 courses (6 Topics and 1 Capstone Project), is delivered in two formats: online and in two half-day Zoom virtual classes per course (one Zoom class for the Capstone).

This certificate is designed to meet the professional needs of senior-level managers and emerging executives of nonprofit and public organizations. The curriculum is designed in a cohort format to promote skill-building and peer networking among seasoned leaders. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a Nonprofit Executive Leadership Certificate from the ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation.

Instructors for this certificate are current and former CEOs and Executive Directors of nonprofit organizations, with extensive experience as change-making practitioners in the social sector. A combination of instructional practices and technological methodologies are used in this certificate to provide an engaging, practice-oriented learning environment that focuses on knowledge, skills and techniques that can be put to use immediately.

The ASU Lodestar Center thanks BeachFleischman PC for providing partial sponsorship of our Nonprofit Executive Leadership Certificate program. BeachFleischman is offering need-based scholarships up to $1,200 each to enroll as candidates in our renowned Executive Leadership program.

Who should apply

This certificate is designed for senior-level management and emerging executive leaders in the nonprofit sector. At a minimum, a candidate should have several years of professional or managerial work experience.

Who Should Apply for this Program?

Candidates should have some executive leadership experience (nonprofit or public organizations); such as Board of Directors leadership, Executive Directors, C-Suite Executives, Senior Management, etc. Candidates should already be in senior management positions or be seeking to obtain an executive level position within a nonprofit organization.

This Certificate is limited to 30 cohort members. Only serious applications will be considered. 

Upon acceptance and final registration, participants are required to attend all seven, Hybrid format (a combination of Zoom* Video Conferencing and Online) courses, demonstrate competency on all course projects, including a final Capstone project to receive the certificate. 

Program Structure

The full certificate is comprised of six courses, one capstone course and project conducted online and via video conferencing over the course of eight months. There is only one Executive Leadership Certificate cohort annually.

The six topic courses are held over two half-day Zoom class sessions facilitated by Nonprofit Subject Matter Experts in which participants interact with each other in lively discourse regarding the executive topics and pre-work materials and cases.  The Capstone course and project is presented in the seventh and final one-day Zoom class.

All courses within this certificate contain required and suggested study materials, cases, assignments, and discussions. Readings, videos, and case studies are located online in ASU Learning Management System: Canvas.   

Participants must complete a project specific to each course section that will be submitted online to their instructor for feedback. At the end of this certificate, participants will present a final Capstone project.

Financial Management for Executives

This session integrates financial management into executive decision making and addresses the struggle to match mission with financial resources. Topics include understanding the components of nonprofit financial statements, accounting for contributions, grants and federal awards, financial accountability, executive processes, and continuous budgeting.

Nonprofit Executive Leadership

In this highly interactive course, participants will explore the role, traits and competencies of the executive. The goal of the course is to help senior level professionals align their leadership skills and competencies with top exemplars. Participants will use a variety of resources and techniques to identify and begin close the gaps between their skills and abilities and those of great nonprofit leaders.

Public Trust and Influence

This course will discuss the role nonprofits play in influencing public policy, leading social movements, building coalition, and organizing issue campaigns. This course highlights successful advocacy strategies used by nonprofit leaders to advance their organization’s mission for the public good. It delineates what nonprofits can and cannot do and engages participants in developing an advocacy strategy plan. Participants will also explore some of the challenging ethical and moral issues common in the nonprofit sector.

Strategic Governance and the CEO

In this course, participants discourse matters of governance to expand their capacity as executive leaders in the nonprofit sector. Topics of significance underscore complimentary modes of governance; the distinct and shared responsibilities of the executive leader and board of directors; and best practices in nonprofit governance.

Social Entrepreneurship, Innovation, & New Business Models

In this course, you will assess your organization’s readiness for social entrepreneurship. You will also learn what it takes to develop a social enterprise and an enterprising mind. Participants will walk away with the key components of a business plan for social entrepreneurship and will have begun the process of identifying possible sources of funding for their organization.

Advanced Resource Development

This course delves into annual funds, major gifts, capital campaigns, planned giving, grants and special events. This course will give participants the foundation and tools needed to implement these fundraising methods in their organizations. By the end of the course, participants will have developed at least one major fundraising plan, focusing on one area.

NMI 260
Nonprofit Executive Leadership Capstone

This is the final aspect of the Executive Leadership Certificate. Participants will deliver a short presentation about their course projects and receive completion certificates.

Candidates must complete the online application form, where you will be prompted to:

  • Upload a current resume (in Word.doc or PDF formats only) 
  • Answer general background information questions. 
  • Submit a $250 a non-refundable application fee (will be applied toward the total cost of your certificate on acceptance).

After I Apply, What's Next?

Within 2-3 business days after receipt of your application, Nonprofit Management Institute (NMI) staff will review and notify you whether your application has been approved. Information on completing your registration will be sent to you at that time. 

If you are accepted into the cohort, you will be entered into the ASU online Canvas program and receive your first course materials within two weeks prior to the first day of class,  March 5, 2021.
