Koppell joins national panel discussion on public service

Dean of the College of Public Service & Community Solutions, Jonathan Koppell, joined a panel of experts at the Council on Foreign Relations to share perspectives on how to promote a culture of national service.

Panel members included Elisa Villanueva Beard, co-chief executive officer of Teach for America, former U.S. Army general Stan McChrystal and Tonia Wellons, associate director of the Office of Strategic Partnerships for the Peace Corps.

The conversation was moderated by special correspondent for NBC News Tom Brokaw.

Koppell shared his opinion on the development of next-generation civilian service corps within universities, citing the Public Allies program at Arizona State University and the upcoming Public Service Academy.

“The notion that young people are disaffected or disinterested in public service is a myth…” said Koppell. “What we don’t have is an environment that encourages them, that gives them opportunities and prepares them to be as effective as possible in public service.”
