Nonprofit Management Certificate Course Descriptions
The Nonprofit Management Institute offers courses taught by outstanding practitioners and academicians. Each Nonprofit Management Certificate course may be taken individually to increase and/or fine-tune your working knowledge of a subject or as part of the comprehensive Nonprofit Management Certificate program. In general, each course is taught once every six months.

This course will provide you a foundation for human resource management, including complying with federal and state employment laws and compensation systems. You will learn practical and lawful strategies to develop human resource policies and job descriptions, retention strategies, and appropriate staffing structures.
In this course, you will learn basic accounting principles and how to interpret and manage financial statements for a nonprofit organization. You will also learn the difference between accrual and cash basis accounting, and the importance of internal controls to protect the assets of your organization. Finally, you will learn to analyze and use tax form 990, along with your organization's annual report, as public relations tools.
Learn how to recruit, manage, motivate, recognize, and reward staff and volunteers in order to effectively utilize their strengths. Volunteer programs require the same type of managerial effort that any other program effort would require and there are many factors to consider in ensuring that the experience is positive for both the volunteer and the organization.
During this course you will be introduced to current models of leadership and seven core leadership competencies. By using a self-analysis tool, you will identify your leadership strengths and core values. You will also learn methods for building internal and external relationships and applying those skills to a business setting. You will also develop a leadership action plan for achieving personal and organizational impact.
Many nonprofit leaders, when asked what their greatest organizational challenge is, will answer, “Fundraising!” Changes in the global economy have focused our attention on the need for philanthropy and fund development more than ever. Join us to learn the basics of the fund development process and how to create a plan that will result in effective fundraising strategies for staff and volunteers – even in tough economic times.
Doing good works is no longer enough. In today’s environment of growing demand, competing priorities and shrinking resources, a leader needs to ensure that the organization is having the desired impact. Decisions about where and how to focus resources so that the desired impact is created must be grounded in evaluation of the organization’s strategies and programs. This course covers the design and implementation of an evaluation system that produces valid, credible and useful information that can be used to assess an organization’s impact.
This course provides a comprehensive overview of board governance, which includes the core roles and responsibilities of board members, as well as the board’s relationship to the CEO and staff. Participants will learn how to develop effective, motivated board members who are accountable for the organization’s assets, committed to develop a diversified resource base, and motivated to champion the organization among various stakeholders.
This course will provide principles and practices for marketing your nonprofit organization. You will also learn current strategies and techniques for successfully positioning your organization and developing a marketing plan that includes social media marketing strategies.
Nonprofit Executive Certificate Course Descriptions
The Nonprofit Management Institute also offers a certifcate program designed for practicing Nonprofit CEOs and Executive Directors. The Nonprofit Executive Leadership Certificate program is administerd in a cohort format and coupled with wrap-around coaching. The six courses below are required to complete the certificate.
The first executive certificate cohort will begin in September 2012. More information will be forthcoming.

This session integrates financial management into executive decision making and addresses the struggle to match mission with financial resources. Topics include understanding the components of nonprofit financial statements, accounting for contributions, grants and federal awards, financial accountability, executive processes, and continuous budgeting.
This course will discuss the role nonprofits play in influencing public policy, leading social movements, building coalitions and organizing issue campaigns. This course highlights successful advocacy strategies used by nonprofit leaders to advance their organization’s mission for the public good, highlights what nonprofits can and cannot do, and engages participants in developing an advocacy strategy plan. Participants are also introduced to the concepts of ethics and morals; integrity; ethical citizenship and civic virtue. All of these concepts are essential when discussing the ethical challenges in public service and the legal issues associated with serving the public.
This course explores the components inherent in creating and maintaining a governing body that promotes a healthy and successful nonprofit organization. Topics covered include: Board recruitment, critical governance, leadership and management, orientation of the board, CEO evaluation, CEO/Board relationship, fundraising and financial roles and responsibilities, and policy-making.
In this course you will assess your organization’s readiness for social entrepreneurship. You will also learn what it takes to develop a social enterprise and an enterprising mind. Walk away with the key components of a business plan and begin the process of identifying possible sources of funding for your enterprise.
This course delves into the annual fund, major gifts, capital campaigns, planned giving, grants and special events. The course will give participants the foundation and tools needed to implement these plans into action. By the end of the course participants will have developed at least one major fundraising plan focusing on one area.
